God has caused us to stay true to the Gospel of His Son Jesus. It is the good news of the unconditional love of God pouring out to us in the blood of His only Son unto death, that we could be saved. I know that I can preach no other message. I also know that you can hear no other message. It is this way with everyone who is born of the Spirit. We only believe One Truth.
Having been born of the Spirit, I think there is something we should both acknowledge and embrace every day. Jesus spoke if it in the following verse:
“The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” -John 3:8
Jesus is speaking about us. The wind is the Holy Spirit. On the day He saved you, you did not know He was coming. He raised you up from the grave to live a new life in Him, through the gift of faith. Because He did it all, you cannot really say you know how you got here. “I once was blind, but now I see.” It wasn’t your decision; it was all Him. Now that you belong to the Spirit, and He belongs to you, you must also admit that you do not know where you are going. Perhaps I should say, you don’t know where He will take you.
I think we would do well everyday to remind ourselves that the Holy Spirit is living in us and with us every second. He is our Master and He has work to do. That work will involve each of us as a vessel. Ours it not to do the work, but to be ready and expect Him to do something at any time. The wind blows wherever it pleases. Paul wrote that, “Men ought to regard us as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the secret things of God.”- 1 Cor 4:1. Honestly, we ought to regard ourselves as those entrusted with the secret things of God. The thing is, they aren’t supposed to be secrets. People must know.
You possess knowledge—by faith—that you were chosen. That He has crucified your sinful nature and given you a new identity in His Son. You know that you are holy, blameless, free from accusation, and free from sin. These are the secret things of God. How many people in the world know these things? Hardly any! How many in the church understand these things? Surprisingly few. But you know them. His Spirit has entrusted you with them.
It is good to wonder what the Holy Spirit is doing with you at any moment during the day. It is good to watch and listen with spiritual eyes and ears as His day unfolds. Not so that you can do something, but so that you are ready if He begins doing something. Paul wrote: “But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that this all-surpassing power is from God, and not from us.” 2Cor 4:7
The treasure is the gospel that we know; the jar of clay is your flesh. Listening and watching for the Spirit’s activity is to hold your flesh at bay—you won’t be surprised when a conversation turns spiritual—and your flesh less likely to react with fear. Often, Christians tell me how intimidated they are about sharing the gospel, saying, “I don’t know enough,” or “I wouldn’t know what to say.” Well, you are not supposed to know what to say. You are not supposed to think of these things ahead of time. That is your flesh at work. The Holy Spirit lives in you and He alone can initiate and carry out this work. But rest assured, you already know the Truth because it has saved you. The Holy Spirit is not going to use you to say something you know nothing about. He will speak from your heart, where He dwells. Just keep watch.
Understand that it is not possible that He has saved you so that you can keep the gospel to yourself. Especially not what YOU know. You have the words of eternal life. It is good to think of such things. Any day can be windy.
